白雨 / Bai Yu

(1980~ )如同水石一般,現在所呈現之樣貌僅是一個過程,對於人生、文化,自身所作之努力和呈現都僅如溪流中的一粒細沙,過去如此,現在如此,未來亦如此。

  自學習繪畫開始,五代、北宋之山水繪畫便為吾人心中之典範。每個時代的人類都有認識世界的渴望,就如同彼時的巨幅山水是以往畫家對世界的體驗,又因還未徹底認識而展現驚嘆、敬重之意。在研究所求學過程中,因藉著研讀古典作品與文獻而更確立了自己對於古典作品的喜好,立定將如此文化延續下去的志向。

  六朝宗柄言「……且夫崑崙之大。瞳子之小。迫目以寸。則其形莫睹。迴以數里。則可圍於寸眸。則其見之彌小。」

  五代、北宋資訊未如當今全面之時,山乃為成接著天與地的象徵,而山水畫便是種小中現大、芥子須彌的工夫。無論是范寬《谿山行旅圖》中對於自然壯闊的敬畏或李唐《萬壑松風圖》對於理想仙境的經營,都是畫家以自身的觀點對於「世界」的認識與詮釋。

  人類的科技日新月異,藉著天文學和科學的幫助,對於世界的認知方式也已從古代「中原」的想像轉換成「地球」的概念,在這些天文學、地質學資料與知識的幫助下,了解現今對「世界」的認知乃為地球存於宇宙之間,這是吾人自幼以來認識「世界」的面貌,亦是二十一世紀文明地區對於世界的普遍認知,而這顆巨大的石頭便是漂浮在無垠的太虛(宇宙)之中,而地球在這宇宙太虛之中亦只是滄海一粟,億萬顆星球中的一顆。不論是一顆顆巨大無比的星球,或小如鴨蛋的隕石,當自身處在一種遠眺、全觀的視角上,這些大大小小的「石頭」,便是一個個「世界」。

  相較於熱烈、積極競爭的主流價值觀,自身性格便顯得較為沉默而和緩。平緩的性格直接影響了個人創作的模式,而長時間的操作過程和觀察便是主要的創作方法。基於這些特性,所以題材必須足以承載長時間觀察,故便選擇水石與巨巖為主要的表現內容。

  吾人作品之創作乃是長時間觀察個人創作的特性,如水滴穿石般的累積,又如鋼琴調音般單聲調之微調。吾人一向以水石、巨巖自勉:「不可不知流水之力,亦不可隨波逐流。」水石、巨巖乃是從千萬年前便存於世,在我們的短暫生命過程中以當下樣貌呈現,當自身凋零之時也不會消失而繼續存在。水石、巨巖對於自己生命意義是一種姿態的展現,一種樸實而頑強的精神。

  創作除了精神的探討之外,媒材之物理特質亦不可忽視。水石為一種材質堅硬而密度厚實之物體,對於其物理特性之營造是以多次的皴染而為之,故媒材本身便需要以承載此般技法為選,而絹本之特性使畫面亦於營造出通透的空氣感,令畫面有較適合之呈現效果。

  最後,如同水石一般,現在所呈現之樣貌僅是一個過程,對於人生、文化,自身所作之努力和呈現都僅如溪流中的一粒細沙,過去如此,現在如此,未來亦如此。


The landscape paintings of the Five Dynasties (907-960) and the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) in China have been my models since I started to study painting. People from different eras share the same desire of exploring the world around them, and the huge scale landscape paintings reflect the experiences of the artists towards the world then, to which they admired and respected the universe due to the unknowns. Besides the masterpieces in art, reading classical literatures in my graduate school period also helped foster my preference towards the classics. My determination to continue such culture thus was established. 

Compared to the ambitious, competitive mainstream values, my personality is rather silent and mild, which directly impact my way of creation, a style requiring long-term operation and observation. 

Also due to my personality, I selected the water-flourished stones to be my painting subject because they are durable for lasting observations. The series of “Huan Shi” (Washing Stones) and “Muo Yen” (Silent Rocks) reflect my style of creation. They are like water drops penetrating the stone, the monotone tuning of piano. I have always encouraged myself with water-stone related aphorisms, such as “one must know the power of water yet not being drifted by water”. Water-stones have existed for tens of thousands of years, being seen as what they appear to be at the moment when the short-lived us show up. When they die, they don’t disappear. Instead, they continue to exist in the universe. Therefore, the meaning of the lives of water-stones turns out to be gestures of life, carrying out the sincere yet stubborn spirit.  

Besides the idea of creation, the substances used for the paintings are also important. Since water-stones are solid in texture and thick in density, I’ve used repeated brushes and ink dying for numerous times to create the impression. To do so, the substance of the media needs to be tough enough to bear this painting style. Silk as the canvas for painting was therefore chosen, with which an impression of airy atmosphere was created in the picture as well. 

Finally, just as the water-stones whose appearances are nothing but a process, my effort and my presentation of life and culture are also like sands in the river. As it was, as it is, and as it will be.
