一對當地的小學老師情侶住在東邊的土耳其人區中心已多年,那是個兩層樓的維多利亞式建築,頂樓的房間裡有顏色繽紛的畫和床單;

每天騎腳踏車到設計公司上班的日本女孩,工作超時而疲備地在醉醒之間蜷伏依賴著自己的房間;

格林威治密集的基督教社區供應姊妹之家住宿,上下舖床是每間房間的固定格局,房間使她們不擁有太多隱私,她們聚集一起共同分享上帝的意義;

來到倫敦的美國年輕女作家,正在撰寫關於英國早期移民的長篇故事,工作結束的休息棧是頂樓有大紅床被和雙窗的房間;

2010-2011, Views from A Drawer to A Room
During the time of moving from one place to another I always try to create a “ my own room” in which I could feel familiar and warm. When I put my belongings in a new room, it seems that nothing is wrong with their position with the first glance, and then somehow, the feeling starts to be strange or awkward. The belongings begin to seem unreal. They settle down in a way that I do not recognize. Sometimes the strangeness of seeing familiar objects in an unfamiliar space (environment, room) seems funny. I tried to explore and recreate this kind of playful sense of space. In my paintings 2010-2011, the structure of space is not easy to define. My room painting is like an unreadable story.

2012, The Story of Empty House
After the degree show at Slade School of Fine Art on July 2011, I got Boise Travel Scholarship to travel in North Europe. I found some old worker’s houses in Finland. I thought it was interesting and could be an idea to bring to my practice. In worker's house at Helsinki and Tampere, Finland, each house has its own story, it is based on the ordinary life of people. When I read the description of each rooms, it seems the time back to 1920, all the objects seem set at the same place only the time and people left. I strongly feel the sense of absence in these empty houses. In my previous series " Views from a Drawer to a Room", I was interested in the strangeness of seeing the familiar objects set in the unfamiliar surroundings. It was about the memory and the relationship between people and their living space. In "The Story of Empty House", I took some images of objects or furniture as a main theme in this series. All the objects and tools are used by some unknown people who lived here, their past life seems so real in front of me. It is weird, scary but haunting me. I feel the objects still remain their souls.

2013 Their Rooms, Their Dreams
It is a visiting project based on the idea of prying into others’ private spaces.
I chose the city “London” in England as the appointed place where I had studied and lived for years. There are 30 participants based on different ages from different living districts and countries who have various jobs. By ways of distributing leaflets and sending random emails, the artist was invited to enter others’ private spaces (houses/rooms). Through the record of observation, photographs, and interviews, I decided to use painting as the medium to convey my ideas.

“For our house is our corner of the world. As has often been said, it is our first universe, a real cosmos in every sense of the word. “- Gaston Bachelard, The poetics of Space (注1) As the room becomes the final stop of whole day, it carries the habit of relying and one’s own privacy to make people safe and cured. The structure of the room (living pattern/interior design), objects (private stuff/furniture) and decorations (the way of display) has showed people’s tastes, favors, identities, cultural backgrounds and religions. For me, those spaces are not only the living places but also the backgrounds of their own stories and the reasons of descriptions. Also, it is a site for floating thoughts, dreams and ideas.

The room may symbolize one’s inner mind and prove the traces of living. On the other hand, for most of people, it is more like a room for a long-term traveler. Comparing to the paintings before, instead of focusing on the memories and appearance of my own spaces, I changed the object into “the others”. The artist was invited to walk into others’ houses, listen to those descriptions of the past stories and sceneries, and observe the randomness of life. Through the language of painting to tell the invisible atmosphere and feeling, the specific spaces had been changed into soft and emotional daydreaming site.
